Hungary has taken a major step toward greener and more efficient emergency care by introducing its first fleet of fully electric ambulances, marking a potential turning point in the country’s rescue services.

Hungary’s emergency medical system has entered a new phase with the deployment of seven fully electric ambulances, marking a significant step in both technological development and sustainability.

The National Ambulance Service has placed seven BYD electric vehicles into service, five of which will strengthen emergency response in Budapest, while two additional units will operate in rural areas.

The newly introduced vehicles are based on the BYD Atto 3 platform and were handed over in a ceremonial event on 1 April. The initiative is supported by the Ministry of Energy, the Chinese manufacturer BYD, and the Schiller Group.

The primary goal of the development is to improve the efficiency of rapid-response units while also reducing the environmental footprint of emergency operations. The introduction of electric ambulances represents not only a technological upgrade but also the beginning of a new era in Hungarian emergency services.

With a 204-horsepower electric motor and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds, the vehicles are designed to meet the demands of urgent response situations. Their 60 kWh battery provides a range of approximately 400 kilometres, ensuring reliable daily operation.

Additional advantages include low energy consumption and regenerative braking, which helps maintain stable and predictable performance. The simpler mechanical structure of electric vehicles, with fewer moving and wearing parts, also reduces maintenance needs and increases operational reliability.

According to Director General of the National Ambulance Service Gábor Csató, the introduction of these vehicles could prove to be a historic milestone. He suggested that in one or two decades, this moment may be seen as the beginning of the era of electric ambulances in Hungary.

The step aligns with broader efforts to modernize public services while integrating environmentally sustainable solutions, positioning Hungary among the countries experimenting with electric mobility in emergency healthcare.
