US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Budapest on Sunday, where he was welcomed at Liszt Ferenc International Airport by Levente Magyar, parliamentary state secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
According to coverage broadcast live by public news channel M1, the official programme of the visit will take place on Monday.
Rubio is scheduled to meet Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, with whom he will sign an agreement on nuclear energy cooperation between the United States and Hungary. The two sides are also expected to discuss bilateral relations and the prospects for achieving peace in Ukraine.
Following the talks at the foreign ministry, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will receive the US Secretary of State. Their discussions will focus on peace efforts, potential peace negotiations and the broader state of Hungarian–American relations. The outcomes of the meetings will be presented at a joint press conference at the Carmelite Monastery in Budapest.
The report noted that the visit is considered particularly significant in light of Hungary’s perceived role in international peace efforts. It also highlighted Orbán’s friendly relationship with President Donald Trump.
