Budapest’s environmental and climate strategy has earned the Global Smart Green City Award at a ceremony in Geneva, the Mayor’s Office announced. The honour was presented by the Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS), one of the most esteemed international organizations dedicated to sustainable urban development, which operates with special consultative status under the UN Economic and Social Council.
The recognition places Budapest in prestigious company: previously, only Vienna and Dublin had been awarded from among European capitals. It is also the first city in Central and Eastern Europe to receive the distinction.
The award acknowledges the Budapest Municipality’s comprehensive plan developed by its Climate and Environmental Protection Department. The submission showcased the city’s approach to safeguarding a healthy and safe urban environment, protecting natural assets and improving resource efficiency. It also highlighted the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening energy efficiency and renewable energy uptake.
Additionally, the Smart Budapest Framework Strategy which integrates data-driven decision-making and intelligent technologies into city management played a key role in securing the award.
Mayor Gergely Karácsony, speaking in a video message from Geneva, said the recognition motivates Budapest to continue preparing for climate change impacts while striving to make the city greener and more liveable.
