Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán voiced strong criticism of the European Union’s energy policies in a Facebook post on Thursday, stating that the energy threat from Ukraine ‘has shifted into a higher gear’.

Referring to a recent meeting of European foreign ministers in Brussels, Orbán said new sanctions are being considered that could severely impact Hungary. ‘It’s clear that Brussels bureaucrats have embraced an absurd energy policy,’ he wrote.

Orbán contrasted the EU’s current direction with Hungary’s own approach, which he described as focused on keeping energy ‘cheap, accessible, and secure’. He argued this is essential for both economic competitiveness and the well-being of families, adding that EU leaders seem indifferent to the everyday concerns of European citizens.

He accused Brussels of prioritizing support for Ukraine ‘at any cost’, with proposals to cut off Russian oil and gas supplies. Such a move, he warned, would double or triple household energy bills in Hungary.

‘We stand with common sense’

‘Enough is enough!’ Orbán declared, vowing to defend Hungary’s system of reduced utility rates. ‘We stand with common sense. In Hungary, families receive energy at affordable, reduced prices, and we will protect this.’

He also emphasized that confronting Brussels’ energy agenda requires collective action, urging citizens to participate in the upcoming Voks 2025 vote. ‘One million have already voted. Join them! Don’t let others decide your future,’ Orbán concluded.
