Director General of the Center for Fundamental Rights Miklós Szánthó believes Hungary’s conservative government is facing an unprecedented international campaign to unseat it before the 2026 elections. In a Monday Facebook post, he described this as a battle between globalist forces and national sovereignty.
According to Szánthó, ‘the big picture’ reveals a fundamental asymmetry: while some argue that Hungary’s public discourse favours the right, he contends that a broad globalist alliance is in fact working against the Hungarian right. He rejected claims of right-wing dominance in the media, referencing millions of dollars funnelled into Hungary’s opposition during the 2022 elections through organizations like Action for Democracy.

He further cited research by his own institution and Hungary’s Sovereignty Protection Office, which claims that organizations such as the Open Society Foundations and USAID have funded left-leaning groups in Hungary to the tune of billions of forints—support that allegedly continues today.
Szánthó accused a ‘complete globalist elite’, including Brussels and figures like George Soros, of seeking to overthrow the current Hungarian leadership. He tied this effort directly to Ukraine’s potential EU membership, suggesting that international liberal forces aim to use it to advance EU centralization—something Hungary’s government firmly opposes.
In this context, Szánthó described Péter Magyar and the Tisza Party as a newly launched vehicle to unite anti-Orbán sentiment. ‘Even Gyurcsány was taken off the board to make room,’ he wrote, calling attention to a familiar network of ‘left-wing fake news media’ and activist NGOs such as TASZ, Helsinki Committee, and Transparency International, which he says continue to support the opposition cause.
He also pointed fingers at what he called the ‘Brussels deep state’—EU institutions using financial pressure tactics—and European officials like Ursula von der Leyen and Manfred Weber, whom he sees as political opponents of Hungary’s government.
Szánthó extended his criticism to include global media, international legal bodies, and human rights watchdogs, from the Council of Europe to Freedom House, portraying them as parts of a vast globalist apparatus. These actors, he claims, will be mobilized again in 2026 to support the opposition and undermine Hungary’s sovereignty.
Szánthó recently also published an article in Hungarian Conservative. His article is available in the newest print magazine, and will be posted online in the near future as well.

🎯 A liberalizmus végleg levetkőzte eredeti céljait: mára a szocializmus ikertestvéreként az egyediség eltörlése, az egyén egyformaságba taszítása a célja. ❌ A mai európai liberalizmus már nem az…
He concluded by warning of intensified ‘information warfare’ and covert interventions in favour of pro-Brussels forces in the next electoral cycle, presenting the upcoming vote as a decisive moment not only for Hungary, but for the future of the European Union.
