Viktor Orbán: The Hungarian People Will Again Be Proven Right

Viktor Orbán explained why his politics will eventually be proven right: ‘We were the only ones who said that borders must be protected during the migration crisis. Later, more and more EU member states realised that we were right. The same will happen regarding the war’, he underlined.

When the left says that we are at war with Russia, they do not know what they are talking about. This is a statement that no sane person has made since World War II. It is enough to make your blood boil, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in his usual Friday morning radio interview. The PM also talked about how, just like in the case of migration, the Hungarian people will be proven right in the matter of peace. Regarding the latest proposals from Brussels, he stated that the EU bureaucrats want to ruin the Hungarian people and the Hungarian economy.

‘It’s none of their business.

It is suggesting that we ruin the Hungarian economy and people:

what they are asking for is austerity,’ Orbán expressed in response to the European Commission’s recommendation to the Hungarian government to end the reduction of utility costs. He stated that there is a broad consensus among the Hungarian people on this matter, regardless of political sympathies. Hungary must stand up for its interests, the prime minister emphasised. He highlighted that any proposal leading to austerity must be rejected and reminded that drawing up the budget of a country is a national competence in the EU.

The PM explained: ‘We are living in wartime, we need to defend ourselves, so we must protect jobs, the value of pensions, and families. That’s why next year’s budget will be a defence budget.’ Orbán stated that a budget must fulfil multifaceted goals. ‘We have a good Minister of Finance, we wouldn’t find a more experienced, battle-hardened minister anywhere in Europe, so I feel the budget is safe with him’, the prime minister praised the work of Mihály Varga. He added: perhaps only prime minister Babiš, the former Czech Minister of Finance, has comparable experience.

The prime minister emphasised: ‘Inflation will not go down on its own, it needs to be brought down. This is a major commitment of the government. By the end of this year, inflation should be in single digits. The war is also taking place in the energy market, not just on the front lines.’ He added that since Hungary is the fastest-growing country with the highest energy demand, the increasing energy prices have serious consequences, which is why it is of paramount importance to bring down inflation.

He recalled that in Brussels the Left ‘made such a fuss about Paks 2’ that the construction got delayed.

If it were not for the war, but if we were on the path of peace, the economic situation would suddenly be easier and inflation would decrease, he remarked.

He mentioned that there are winners and losers in war, and the ones who suffer the most are those who lose their loved ones. ‘In the East, the situation remains unchanged, and the war has entered a very brutal phase. When the left-wing says that we are at war with Russia, they don’t know what they’re talking about. This is a statement that a sane person hasn’t allowed themselves to make since World War II. It’s enough to make one’s blood boil,’ the PM reacted to the words of Mayor Gergely Karácsony. The prime minister stated that talking about war is part of the war, but since we are not involved in the war, we observe it from the outside. The Russo-Ukrainian conflict is not our war, although it is close by, clarified Orbán. He added: we are more composed, although everyone in the West is enthusiastic. Every sensible person knows that if a country attacks, its losses will be three times greater than those defending, referring to Ukraine. Orbán Viktor expressed that the parties need to be convinced that a ceasefire is necessary. According to him, in elections, people will eventually demand peace because the majority of people are not in favour of war. It will be difficult for those who are far away and send money from afar, he opined. The prime minister believes that the number of peace supporters is increasing.

He explained why his politics will eventually be proven right: ‘We were the only ones who said that borders must be protected during the migration crisis. Later, more and more EU member states realised that we were right.

The same will happen regarding the war’, he underlined.

The PM also spoke about the importance of standing up for rights as Hungarians. ‘When we didn’t express our opinion, we always ended up losing,’ he added. Orbán expressed hope that it will not happen this time, although it is a difficult situation.

On the topic of the EU presidency, Viktor Orbán nailed down: ‘The European Parliament has nothing to do with the EU presidency; the country doesn’t need to even deal with [their position]. It has as much relevance

as if the parliament of Eskimos hade decided on this matter.’

Regarding the Turkish elections, the PM stated: ‘I specifically rooted for and prayed for Erdoğan’s victory; it would have been a tragedy if he hadn’t won.’ Orbán underscored that Erdoğan will not allow four million people to whom his country is giving asylum to leave the country. ‘Soros’s candidate was Erdoğan’s opponent. If Soros’s candidate had won, they would have unleashed millions of people on us’, the PM explained. ‘Russian gas comes through Turkey, and if a Soros-affiliated president had been in power, it would have been highly doubtful whether the gas would have reached us. Furthermore, Erdoğan is a peace advocate’, the prime minister remarked.
