Prime Minister Viktor Orbán warned that introducing the so-called ‘TISZA tax’ is part of a Brussels plan to finance war preparations and Ukraine’s EU accession. He pledged that Hungary will resist such pressures and remain on the side of peace.

At a closed-door Fidesz–KDNP parliamentary group meeting in Balatonfüred on Wednesday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán outlined the challenges ahead for his government and warned of what he described as ‘threats from Brussels’, according to a report by Magyar Nemzet.

Orbán opened his remarks by saying the summer was ‘clearly won by Fidesz’, citing opinion polls and analyses that show the ruling party’s continued strength. However, he cautioned lawmakers not to relax, stressing that ‘serious tasks’ lie ahead in the run-up to the next parliamentary elections.

The prime minister pointed to what he sees as his government’s achievements: significant increases in average and minimum wages, steadily rising real incomes, and the launch of the Otthon Start programme to support first-time homebuyers with fixed-rate housing loans at 3 per cent interest. He also highlighted expanded tax benefits for families, including income tax exemptions for mothers with two or three children, as well as ongoing support for pensioners through food voucher distribution.

Turning to what he described as external dangers, Orbán claimed that the opposition Tisza Party had ‘exposed itself’ by preparing for ‘brutal tax hikes’, which he said form part of a wider Brussels-driven agenda. According to him, the proposed ‘Tisza tax’ would ultimately finance EU plans to support Ukraine and military buildup.

‘Hungary stands on the side of peace. We will not fund Brussels’ war preparations, nor can we accept Ukraine’s EU accession, which poses serious risks for our country,’ Orbán stated.

He insisted that the European institutions are pushing for a government change in Hungary to turn the country into a financial contributor to the war and to restart Ukraine’s accession talks, currently blocked by Budapest. ‘Resisting these demands will require the full commitment of every lawmaker in the coming months,’ Orbán concluded.
