A Sudanese woman living in Budapest, Hungary has been sentenced to nine years in prison by a local trial court who found her guilty of possession of child pornography and drugs on Monday, 11 September.

The woman came to the country as a legal refugee in 2003. However, in late 2020, suspicion arose that she obtained her refugee status from the Hungarian government under a false identity. As a result, an investigation was launched to see if her status should be revoked, during which process her cell phone was seized as well by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing in January 2021.

Three images of underaged children in sexual context were found on her phone,

so the immigration agency alerted the local authorities. In their recent Monday briefing, the Municipal Chief Prosecutor’s Office also noted that the defendant had ‘shared two of these images with other users’ in September and October of 2019, a fact that made her offense even more severe.

On top of the child porn charges, about 400 grammes (14 ounces) of cocaine were also found in the apartment the African woman was renting in Budapest’s 8th district. As we wrote above, she was sentenced to serve nine years of prison; and she will be banned from entering Hungary for nine years after her release, and from ever being employed in a position where she would be in regular contact with children as well. The defence still has the option to appeal.
