The most anticipated event of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary’s current visit to the United States is his meeting with former US President Donald Trump in Palm Beach, Florida. However, before the two distinguished statesmen convene, PM Orbán took the stage at a discussion hosted by the conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation in the capital city of Washington DC on Thursday, 7 March.
The event was titled The Future of Relations Between the United States and Hungary. As both sides admit, these relations have not been the most amicable lately, with the US’s constant efforts to pressure Hungary into changing course on such issues as LGBTQ, the promotion of modern gender theory, and the Russo-Ukrainian war. PM Orbán, however, has publicly expressed his hopes many times before that this would change with a second Trump administration coming into power this autumn.
The discussion, moderated by Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts, was not open to the public. According to the Hungarian news agency MTI,
Viktor Orbán talked about the need for a global movement ‘advocating for justice, tradition, families, and the people’.
With that statement, he most likely also referred to the European Parliamentary election coming this June, and the presidential election in the United States as well.
The Hungarian Prime Minister also lauded the successes of the family support policies in his home country, and talked about the possible outcomes of the war in Ukraine.
Whatever has been exactly said at the event really impressed Matt Waters, editor of the New Right Report, as he called PM Orbán ‘a one-man think tank’ in a tweet.
While still in Washington, D.C., the Hungarian Prime Minister also met with Steve Bannon, the former editor-in-chief for the right-wing online news site Breitbart and former advisor to President Trump. Secretary of State for International Communication Zoltán Kovács informed that ‘the meeting underscored the continuous effort to strengthen the conservative dialogue and cooperation between Hungary and the United States,’ also on the social media platform X.
