Left-wing journalists in Hungary have been trying to smear Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén as someone implicated in the prostitution scandal at the Szőlő Street Juvenile Corrections Centre in Budapest, Hungary, without any basis in reality. Miklós Szánthó, the head of the Center for Fundamental Rights, has responded to the smear campaign in a fiery Facebook video.

‘The whole tsunami of accusations about the Szőlő Street [Juvenile Corrections Centre] case is nothing but a petty conspiracy concocted by the press,’ Director General for the Center for Fundamental Rights Miklós Szánthó wrote in the caption for his video posted to his Facebook page on Friday, 26 September.

The scandal he referenced is about the Superintendent of the Szőlő Street Juvenile Corrections Centre in Budapest, Hungary being arrested for suspicion of human trafficking and procuring prostitutes. Some journalists on the left tried to get Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén of Hungary implicated in the scandal, without any evidence. This is what Director Szánthó is responding to in his passionate video.

‘The left-wing press is starting to create a kind of libel campaign in relation to the Szőlő Street case. Evidently, this is only because TISZA was getting burnt by the tax hike story, so they needed something as a distraction,’ he states at the start of his address.

‘It turned out that the whole thing is one big damn lie. There are no minors involved in the case, there are no politicians involved in the case, and there is certainly no “Uncle Zsolti”. The guy in charge of the Szőlő Street Juvenile Corrections Centre—not a foster home—is indeed under criminal prosecution, but because he was procuring prostitutes, who were all women of age.

It also turned out that the sources, Csaba Káncz and Gábor Kuslits, were lying through their teeth. After this was revealed, instead of leaving with their tails tucked in between their legs and shutting up, they are attacking, attacking, and attacking again. They have started to argue that the Minister of Justice has no proper authority to investigate this matter. And they have started to use the old [Hungarian communist leader] Rákosi tactic of accusing their opponents of the things they are doing. They are saying that this libel campaign tactic is now backfiring on Fidesz and the right. Hell no! You were the ones starting this,’ the visibly fired-up Szánthó has explained in his Facebook video.
