Mercedes will begin producing the A-Class in Hungary from this year, expanding its manufacturing footprint in Kecskemét. The move further strengthens Hungary’s role in the company’s European production network, according to Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.

Mercedes will bring production of the A-Class to Hungary starting this year, Foreign Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced in a social media post on Tuesday.

Szijjártó said Hungary has achieved major economic successes at a time when much of Europe is struggling with the economic consequences of the war and what he described as misguided EU policies. Despite criticism from parts of the media, he argued that investors clearly recognize Hungary’s economic performance, as shown by the steady inflow of large-scale, high-technology investments.

According to the minister, global competition for manufacturing capacity has intensified as major powers pursue reindustrialization, yet leading multinational companies continue to choose Hungary. He attributed this to political stability, a competitive tax system, strong vocational training and a skilled workforce.

Szijjártó highlighted Kecskemét as a prime example, noting that over the past decade Mercedes has built its largest European production plant in Hungary. Globally, only facilities in China surpass it in capacity. More than 5,000 people are now directly employed at the plant, which was named Hungary’s most attractive workplace in 2024 and has repeatedly been recognized as one of the best-performing factories within the Mercedes group worldwide.

The minister recalled that the two-millionth vehicle rolled off the Kecskemét production line in October 2024. The plant currently manufactures advanced internal combustion engine models, plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles, while Mercedes is also establishing its first research and development center in Hungary.

With the addition of the A-Class, Mercedes will now produce three models in Hungary, including the new fully electric GLB, the latest C-Class and the A-Class. Szijjártó said the decision reflects the impact of what he called a pragmatic economic policy, stable governance and Hungary’s approach to energy supply.
