National Media and Infocommunications Authority Approves Launch of New National Sports Radio

The National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) has awarded nearly 160 million forints in support to 29 applicants in the first round of the TVÁLLANDÓ2024 grant process. At its meeting on 28 May the council approved the initiative submitted by the public media corporation MTVA and Duna Media Service Ltd to launch the National Sports Radio, planned to broadcast 24 hours a day, starting on 14 June on the internet and the Budapest 105.9 MHz terrestrial frequency, according to a Thursday statement of the NMHH’s communications directorate.

According to the statement, in March, the Media Council issued a call for proposals to support the production of television public affairs and cultural magazine programmes, as well as news programmes. At the time of the announcement, 520 million forints were available for the four rounds of the TVÁLLANDÓ2024 grant process. However, on 28 May the media council also decided to increase the grant fund for TVÁLLANDÓ2024 by 34,649,249 forints, the amount remaining from the TVÁLLANDÓ2023 grant process.

The grant allows for the production of public service programmes to be broadcast in all four quarters of the year, airing weekly on the same day and at the same time. According to the statement, 32 applications were received in the first round, of which 29 were deemed worthy of support by the council. As a result, 28,117,000 forints were allocated for the production of nine public affairs magazine programmes, 115,419,750 forints for twelve news programmes, and 16,439,950 forints for eight cultural magazine programmes.

The media council supported the initiative by MTVA and Duna Media Service Ltd to launch the National Sports Radio, aimed at making domestic and international sports events more accessible to listeners,

particularly focusing on this year’s European Football Championship with Hungarian participation, and the Summer Olympic Games.

The public service media provider plans to broadcast the 24-hour National Sports Radio on the internet and the Budapest 105.9 MHz frequency.
