Two backpacks filled with explosives were found near the Serbia–Hungary gas pipeline, President Aleksandar Vučić of Serbia announced on Easter Sunday, 5 April. President Vučić has also briefed Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary on the matter, who has called an emergency meeting of the Defence Council in response.
‘I have just finished a phone call with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary, during which I briefed him on the initial findings of the investigation conducted by our military and law enforcement authorities regarding the threat to the critical gas infrastructure connecting the gas pipelines of Serbia and Hungary,’ President Vučić has written in a Facebook post. ‘Our units found explosives with enormous destructive power and the detonators needed to make them go off,’ he added.
‘I just got off the phone with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. Serbian authorities have found a powerful explosive and the devices needed to detonate it at the critical gas infrastructure connecting Serbia and Hungary. The investigation is ongoing,’ PM Orbán has shared in a Facebook post of his own.
According to Serbian press reports, investigations are underway in the town of Magyarkanizsa (Kanjiža) in Vojvodina, a region in Northern Serbia with a large ethnic Hungarian population, and the surrounding area. The Serbian newspaper Srbja Danas reports that Aleksandar Vučić revealed further details during a visit to the scene on Sunday: the President has stated that the two backpacks filled with explosives have been found a few hundred yards from the gas pipeline.
The explosives were successfully defused without injuring anyone.
Vučić Believes Geopolitical Games Are behind the Attack on Serbia–Hungary Pipeline
Aleksandar Vučić has also claimed that there are certain leads he cannot discuss in connection with the case. Regarding the search, he said: ‘The area was vast. There is a large lake there, so they have been searching for these [explosives] for a long time; the helicopter units were a great help.’
On the possible causes behind the attack, he stated: ‘It is obvious that the world or geopolitical games will not leave us alone, and that is why we must demonstrate our capabilities at the highest level. We will act ruthlessly against anyone who thinks they can threaten the vital infrastructure of the Republic of Serbia.’ According to President Vučić, these were powerful explosives that could have endangered ‘a great many people’.
