According to Chief of the Prime Minister Office Gergely Gulyás, the developments in Tarcal are clear evidence of the rapid growth of the Tokaj region, and consequently, the whole country. He added that the nearly 620 million forints worth of road reconstruction, supported by the government, will make vineyards accessible by bike and on foot, not only for the winemakers and landowners, but also for those who visit Tokaj-Hegyalja for tourism purposes.

This year, tourism is breaking records all over Hungary, with the latest national data approaching or surpassing the best year so far, 2019, Chief of the Prime Minister’s Office Gergely Gulyás said on Wednesday in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County town of Tarcal at the inauguration of a newly renovated municipal road. The reconstruction was carried out as part of the Tokaj-Zemplén Regional Development Programme.

Gergely Gulyás emphasised that the sector still offers incredible opportunities, with some yet undiscovered regions of the country deserving attention and likely to attract tourists’ interest. The government is committed to supporting local plans and developments that have been or are yet to be implemented in the region. As one of the most beautiful regions in the country, Tokaj-Hegyalja will gain recognition in the tourism sector in the coming years, the minister emphasised. Gulyás stated that the inauguration of the road symbolises the progress achieved in Tokaj-Hegyalja and Tarcal. The developments here are clear evidence of the rapid growth of the Tokaj region, and consequently, the whole country, the minister stressed. He added that the nearly 620 million forints worth of road reconstruction, supported by the government, will make vineyards accessible by bike and on foot, not only for the winemakers and landowners but also for those who visit Tokaj-Hegyalja for tourism purposes.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy Zsófia Koncz stated that in addition to infrastructural developments, such as road and bike path construction, accommodation facilities and related services in the Tokaj Wine Region have also expanded and improved significantly in recent years. Several four- and five-star hotels have been built, and there is continuous development and expansion of services and attractions. For example, in Mád, there is a visitor centre now, and in Tarcal, a harvest house has been built, with the creation of a wine street still in progress, Koncz enumerated. Eight hundred metres of the main street in Tokaj will be renewed, and there are several similar plans for other settlements, as well as for the residents, she added.

‘The development of this road was as crucial for our village as a bite of bread for a beggar,’ the independent mayor of Tarcal László Butta praised the investment. He pointed out that previously Tarcal had only a one-kilometre-long hard surface municipal road, and through this programme, the village now gained three and a half kilometres of road. As he explained, according to the plans, the remaining funds will be used to build another kilometre of hard surface road leading to the broadcasting tower on the Tokaj Hill.
