Leaders of the ruling Fidesz–KDNP alliance on Monday presented their national party list for the 12 April parliamentary election, highlighting what they described as historic achievements and sharply criticizing the opposition. The list is headed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who also serves as president of Fidesz.
Speaker of Parliament and Head of Fidesz’s National Board László Kövér said the governing parties could point to historic successes. He argued that employment had reached record levels and praised Hungary’s family support system, saying it was admired internationally. He added that while Hungary had once ranked at the bottom of the European Union in demographic indicators in 2010, it now ranked among the top. The proportion of people living in poverty had been halved, and national assets doubled, he said.
Kövér also cited national policy achievements benefiting Hungarians both within and beyond the country’s borders and said Hungary had regained its financial and economic independence. He described the election as decisive and thanked outgoing lawmakers and cabinet members for their work over the past four years.
He criticized the opposition in strong terms, calling it the weakest in quality in history and comparing it unfavourably even to previous post-communist parties.
Head of the Christian Democratic People’s Party Zsolt Semjén said the KDNP remained the only historic party on Hungary’s political landscape and that its programme had been consistent from 1944 through 1990 to the present day. He referred to the party’s historical role in defending national sovereignty against both Nazi and Soviet occupation and said it continued to represent Christian values. He described the KDNP as both a party of experienced statesmen and of young Christian democrats, and called it a reliable choice for voters.
‘Wrong decisions could have long-term consequences’
Prime Minister’s Political Director Balázs Orbán said the current period was historic and warned that wrong decisions could have long-term consequences. He argued that there was growing pressure in Europe for deeper involvement in the war in Ukraine and claimed that Ukraine’s potential European Union membership would place a heavy financial burden on member states. He said the government opposed Ukraine’s accession and pledged to protect Hungary’s economic interests, including household utility price reductions, family benefits and pensions.
He also accused international corporations of seeking to regain influence in Hungary and said only a national government could prevent external actors from shaping domestic policy.
Máté Kocsis, leader of the Fidesz parliamentary group, described the election as a choice between what he called national sovereignty and subordination to foreign interests. He criticized opposition figure Péter Magyar and said the ruling alliance was prepared to face a changed political landscape after the vote, including stronger social media influence and increased international pressure. He called for discipline and rapid response from candidates during the campaign.
The Fidesz–KDNP national list is led by Viktor Orbán, followed by Zsolt Semjén, László Kövér, Member of the European Parliament Kinga Gál and Alexandra Szentkirályi, leader of the alliance’s group in the Budapest assembly.
