Viktor Orbán is the only guarantee that Ukraine will not join the European Union because the country does not meet the necessary preconditions, including on the corruption index, the co-chairwoman of Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland said in an interview with Mandiner’s Editor-in-Chief Zoltán Szalai on the MAXIMA programme.
Alice Weidel said Ukraine’s economic indicators and political transmission processes do not make it suitable for EU membership. She described Ukraine as a disorganized and entirely dysfunctional state that should never be admitted to the bloc.
The AfD politician added that countries such as candidate states Montenegro and Serbia had apparently been ‘mixed up’ with Ukraine in the accession process. She also said Ukraine should neither become a member of the EU nor NATO.
Weidel said that, similarly to the Hungarian governing party, AfD aims to achieve peace in Europe and believes that dialogue with both sides of the war is necessary. She criticized the German government, arguing that it appears not to have learned from the past and describing the current situation as harmful. She questioned how Germany could simultaneously be at odds with the United States, China and Russia.
Speaking about European leadership, Weidel said their actions had been extremely damaging and warned that the number of political conflicts created could trigger processes that might later become uncontrollable.
She described the war in Ukraine as a proxy war and said only the United States is capable of establishing peace. According to Weidel, the conflict is not between Russia and Ukraine but between the United States and Russia, making them the real negotiating parties. She added that Europeans should not be concerned with the exact location of the Russian–Ukrainian border and that Europe’s priority should be preventing further escalation.
Weidel also argued that the peace process is currently being undermined by European leaders who support Zelenskyy, whom she claimed lacks acceptance among his own population. She warned that the situation could reach a point where it can no longer be resolved and suggested that Europeans withdraw, remain neutral and act as mediators instead of trying to play a larger role.
The AfD co-chairwoman also said Brussels is exerting strong influence on Hungary’s elections in order to install the opposition leader in government. Referring to Péter Magyar, she said she considers him not credible and described him as a Brussels puppet whose aim is to tie Hungary more closely to the European Union and implement instructions from Brussels. According to Weidel, Hungary would lose an important level of independence if he were to gain influence.
‘Brussels is exerting strong influence on Hungary’s elections in order to install the opposition leader in government’
She added that she does not believe he will be elected in April but said attention should be paid to him and his movement, claiming that Brussels is clearly exerting strong influence on the election within the country.
Speaking about her own party, Weidel said several German states will hold parliamentary elections in March where AfD expects record results, although these will not yet be sufficient to make the party a governing force. She added that two further state elections in September could give the party the opportunity to obtain an absolute majority of mandates.
Weidel said AfD has repeatedly offered to cooperate with the CDU to form a coalition but that the party rejected these proposals, which she said had strengthened AfD. She also criticized the so-called firewall policy used against her party, arguing that refusing to speak with each other prevents politicians from fulfilling the will of voters. She said democrats should never allow a situation where they do not talk to one another because they were elected by the people and have a duty to move closer together and make compromises.
She also said conditions in Germany are deteriorating day by day, with a record number of companies going bankrupt or moving abroad, leading to significant job losses. According to Weidel, more people are questioning the country’s future and the worse the situation becomes, the more support AfD receives. She added that the government led by Friedrich Merz has no strategy for reforming the country and claimed that elites fear the party could become too strong and might consider banning it.
