Visit Hungary has signed a cooperation agreement with China’s WeChat Pay to promote Hungary as a travel destination and improve digital payment options for Chinese tourists, creating a smoother and more connected travel experience from arrival to departure.

A new strategic partnership between WeChat Pay and Visit Hungary aims to strengthen Hungary’s appeal as a destination for Chinese travellers while improving digital payment accessibility across the country. The collaboration focuses on promoting Hungarian culture, integrating digital services, and expanding payment options in the tourism, retail, hospitality, and entertainment sectors.

Through China’s popular mobile payment platform, known domestically as Weixin Pay, Chinese tourists will soon enjoy seamless transactions throughout their journeys from trip planning and booking to local shopping and entertainment. The partnership also opens new opportunities for Hungarian merchants to connect with China’s rapidly growing and highly valuable consumer base.

A key milestone in WeChat Pay’s rollout in Hungary is its acceptance at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport, the main gateway for Chinese visitors—where duty-free stores, souvenir shops, and various retailers now support the service. This means travellers can use their familiar payment method as soon as they land.

CEO of Visit Hungary Olivér Csendes emphasized that the partnership will help local businesses reach and serve Chinese consumers more effectively thanks to WeChat Pay’s digital capabilities. He added that the initiative will also generate valuable insights and data to accelerate the digital transformation of Hungary’s tourism sector.

Jeff Hu, Managing Director of Weixin Pay Europe, highlighted that the agreement marks an important step in the company’s expansion across Europe. Through this cooperation, Chinese tourists will gain access to WeChat Pay services from the moment they arrive, ensuring convenience at every stage of their trip.

Currently, WeChat Pay operates in 32 European markets and supports transactions in 11 currencies, including the euro and Hungarian forint, across both the travel and retail sectors.
