As we reported earlier, the pride flags displayed on Elisabeth Bridge in Budapest, Hungary by the city’s municipal government for pride month were removed by an unknown man last month, on 21 June.
The perpetrator was caught on camera, tossing the flags into the Danube River in broad daylight. Given the evidence, the 58-year-old man from Mogyoród, Hungary, was quickly caught by police and interrogated as a suspect, according to a statement by Budapest Police. He is being investigated for vandalism.
The X account Daily Romania has posted about the incident on 28 June, writing: ‘A 58-year-old man in Hungary could face up to three years in prison for removing 40 LGBTQ Pride flags from a Budapest bridge.’ They were referring to the high end of the statutory sentences for vandalism under the Hungarian Criminal Code. Three years can be given for a vandalism conviction if the offence results in significant damage, or if it involves cultural property, a historic monument, an object of religious veneration, a church, or a burial site.
However, famous British right-wing activist Tommy Robinson came to the man’s defence on X.
‘Prison? The lad is a HERO!!! What kind of woke wankery is this?’ he wrote in response to the post by Daily Romania.
That quote tweet has received far more engagement than the original post. While Daily Romania’s tweet got 795 likes, 123 retweets, and 91 comments, Tommy Robinson’s post got 11,000 likes, 1,000 retweets, and 295 comments.
