Leftist variety streamer Ian ‘iDubbbz’ Johmha has been under fire for making fun of and attacking an Iranian immigrant who appeared on the American reality show 90 Day Fiancé about foreign nationals marrying American citizens for visas.
Last month, iDubbbz streamed himself on Twitch watching the long-running TLC programme with his wife Anisa Jomha. One of the episodes they viewed featured 26-year-old Mahdi Al-Saadi from Tehran, Iran. The immigrant from Iran shared his appreciation for the freedoms he has in America, as opposed to the lack of those in Iran. In his home country, as he shared, the so-called ‘morality police’ regularly arrest people for simply singing or dancing on the street.
The Jomhas responded to this by mocking the man, and insinuating that he is not telling the truth about life in Iran, with iDubbbz even claiming ‘It feels like he’s f***king paid to do propaganda for the US’.
In reality, there have been multiple reported instances of people being arrested and sentenced to lashes for dancing in public in Iran, violating a law that mainly targets women.
During the awkward segment, the Johmans insinuated that, under President Trump, people in the United States do not have considerably more freedoms than people in Iran.
The streamer couple decided to double down on their opinion after the initial wave of backlash over their comments. However, in an epic twist of irony, massive waves of protest broke out across Iran against the oppressive Ayatollah regime just a couple of days after.
The man featured in the video also responded to the Jomhas’ claims about him. Al-Saadi recently appeared on the H3 Podcast hosted by Ethan Klein, a friend-turned-nemesis of iDubbbz. There, he shared how upset his wife was after seeing the segment that the Jomhas streamed about him and his home counrty; and shared further details about the economic troubles and government oppression in Iran.
Who Is iDubbbz?
The streamer iDubbbz’s birth name is Ian Washburn, and he rose to prominence online in the mid-2010s by creating offensive comedy videos. However, in 2023, he disavowed his old content and fans; and turned towards progressive political commentary as his main type of content.
He married fellow online content creator Anisa Jomha in 2021, and in a strange move, took on her new wife’s last name. Previously, he had faced criticism online from his own fans for his partner selling nude photos of herself on the paywalled sexual content platform OnlyFans. For this, he was branded as ‘cuck’, as in cuckold, by many on the internet. This notion about him was further enforced after video clips surfaced of his wife talking about her attraction to another progressive political streamer, Hasan ‘HasanAbi’ Piker.
Since turning to progressive political commentary and away from offensive humour, iDubbbz’s viewership cratered online. He is now streaming to fewer than 200 viewers on Twitch on average, many of whom are there to watch his content out of hate.
