If you are coming to spend your holiday in Hungary from abroad, the overwhelming chances are that you will be visiting the capital city of Budapest. However, if you are a local living in Hungary full-time, you will be looking to get away from the nation’s largest population centre by far in the summer.
Lake Balaton, the 23rd largest freshwater lake in Europe and the largest in Central Europe, is the typical go-to choice in summertime for domestic travellers in Hungary. Located in the Western half of the country, it has plenty of options for domestic tourists.
However, thanks to data released by the hotel affiliate Szallas.hu, we now know which city is the #1 choice for domestic vacations for Hungarians. The answer is: the city of Siófok, in Somogy County, on the Southern shore of Lake Balaton.
Siófok has a population of 24,000 people, making it the most populous city on the Balaton shore. Its best-known sights include the Siófok Water Tower, the Siófok Ferris Wheel, and the Upside Down House of Siófok. It was founded in the 11th century, and its name appears in the oldest surviving piece of written Hungarian text, the Tihany Abbey foundational charter.
From Szallas.hu’s recently published data, we can also learn that Hungarians tend to prefer two-night stays, with 27 per cent of bookings choosing that duration, followed by three- and one-night stays tied in second place with 21 per cent each. Three-quarters of bookings were under 170,000 HUF ($490).
