Hungarian animation is making a major splash at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, launching the first English-language industry site, Hunimation.com, and debuting a new trailer showcasing 75 works from 24 studios.

Hungarian animation is preparing for its most prominent presence yet at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which kicks off on 8 June. As part of the guest of honour programme celebrating Hungary’s animation heritage and industry, the National Film Institute has announced the launch of Hunimation.com, the first comprehensive English-language website dedicated to Hungarian animation.

The new platform was developed with the support of the National Film Institute and produced by the Friss Hús team. It aims to present the full spectrum of Hungary’s animation scene—studios, creators, schools, and organizations—and serve as a long-term gateway for international collaborations, co-productions, and festival opportunities. Designed by award-winning animator Mirjana Balogh, the site features news, event listings, detailed industry profiles, and exclusive content in a user-friendly format.

‘The platform fills a long-standing gap,’ director of Hungary’s guest of honour programme at Annecy Ildikó Takács said. ‘Until now, there has been no English-language hub offering this level of detail on Hungarian animation.’

Coinciding with the site’s launch, a new industry trailer has also been released. Featuring clips from 75 films by 24 Hungarian studios, the video showcases the creative and technical diversity of Hungary’s animation industry. Scored by sound designer Péter Mári, the trailer reimagines Brahms’ Hungarian Dances with a fresh, contemporary sound that blends traditional motifs with international flair.

The site includes a dedicated section for Annecy-related screenings, exhibitions, and industry events, along with behind-the-scenes articles and interviews. It will continue to operate beyond the festival, maintained by the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design’s Film Knowledge Centre.

The launch of Hunimation.com and the new reel signal a bold step forward in promoting Hungary’s animation talent on the global stage. Both the industry trailer and an earlier retrospective video titled 111 Years of Hungarian Animation are available on the National Film Institute’s YouTube channel.
