Budapest’s latest wave of transport modernization begins Monday, as the city starts test operations for its new electric buses. According to the Mayor’s Office, the vehicles may enter service ahead of schedule and could be carrying passengers as early as December.
The Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK) has ordered a total of 82 electric buses to be delivered by 2027. Operated by ArrivaBus Ltd, the new fleet will consist of 58 standard and 24 articulated vehicles. City officials highlighted that two-thirds of public transport journeys in Budapest already take place on electric vehicles, but increasing the share of electric buses remains a key challenge.
A significant step forward is the introduction of a large number of articulated electric buses—a first in Hungary—which will make Budapest home to the country’s largest articulated electric fleet.
The new buses feature low floors, air conditioning, and advanced safety systems including blind-spot monitoring, cyclist and pedestrian detection, and driver fatigue alerts. They also offer spacious priority areas for wheelchair users and parents with strollers, bicycle transport options and numerous USB charging points. Their modern charging technology optimizes overnight charging and day-to-day operation.
Before entering regular service, drivers and maintenance staff must familiarize themselves with the vehicles’ new systems, which is the purpose of the test phase. The trial runs will take place on routes 105 and 210, where the electric buses are expected to appear in normal traffic from early December.
