Budapest’s long-awaited Biodome entered a new chapter on Tuesday with the opening of its permanent Biodome Urban Oasis, a year-round attraction featuring tropical and subtropical plants alongside a selection of exotic animal species.
Located within the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, the Biodome has been designed as both an exhibition space and a community venue. Visitors can explore lush indoor vegetation while observing species including hanuman langurs, Bali mynas and African spurred tortoises.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Budapest Zoo Director General Endre Sós said the four-season facility offers an immersive environment that combines botanical displays with wildlife exhibitions.
Minister for the Living Environment László Gajdos highlighted the importance of nature conservation, environmental protection and animal welfare, saying the government intends to strengthen environmental governance. He noted that animal welfare will now fall under a dedicated deputy state secretariat and said the ministry’s name reflects a commitment to protecting the planet’s living environment.
Gajdos also emphasized the educational role of zoos, arguing that they are often where children first encounter biodiversity and begin to understand the importance of protecting nature. Hungary has 13 municipally operated zoos and around 50 privately owned facilities, attracting more than four million visitors each year. Beyond recreation and tourism, he said, zoos also contribute to scientific research and conservation.
Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony described the Biodome as a symbol whose legacy will ultimately depend on how it develops in the coming years. He recalled inheriting a project in 2019 that had suffered from inadequate planning and thanked zoo staff for persevering despite years of uncertainty, ultimately transforming the unfinished building into a functioning urban oasis.
The newly opened central hall features a tropical landscape complete with a waterfall, exotic plant collections and animated prehistoric creature reconstructions. The permanent exhibition opens to the public on Wednesday.
Construction of the Biodome began in 2018 as part of an ambitious plan to create a climate-controlled ecosystem capable of housing numerous exotic species. Originally scheduled for completion in 2021, the project was delayed for several years amid political disputes between the national government and the Budapest municipality, as well as funding uncertainties.
The Biodome first opened its doors in 2024 for temporary exhibitions and major events. The launch of the Urban Oasis marks its first permanent visitor attraction.
