Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation last month, on 22 June. However, he will not leave office until his Labour Party completes the selection process for his successor, which is not expected until early September, after the Parliament’s summer recess.
Thus, PM Starmer still has time to focus on issues he feels are pertinent to the British people. For instance, on Monday, June 29, he decided to host a pride event in celebration of Pride Month and the LGBTQ community at the prime ministerial residence in 10 Downing Street in London, UK.
His social media team uploaded a short video to his platforms, in which lesbian Labour MP Olivia Bailey jokingly says that PM Starmer has inspired her in many ways, most notably her hairstyle. She then introduces the outgoing Prime Minister as a ‘lesbian style icon’, which he seems to be happy with. ‘Lesbian style icon, I like that,’ Keir Starmer said as he took the stage at the pride event.
‘I am really proud that we got the gayest Parliament. I don’t think just of all time [in British history, but] anywhere in the world,’ he also declared.
Currently, there are 76 LGBTQ Members serving in the House of Commons out of the total 650 seats. 62 are from PM Starmer’s Labour Party, eight from the Liberal Democrat Party, four from the Conservative Party, and one from the Green Party.
However, Prime Minister Starmer stressed that it is not just about the numbers, and touted the steps his government took to better the lives of LGBTQ people in Britian, such as ‘the HIV action plan’ aiming ot stop the spread of AIDS, the designation of hate crimes against gay and trans people as aggravated offences, and the ban on ‘abusive’ conversion therapy treatments for gay people.
Keir Starmer’s approval rating has consistently been in the 20s since late 2024. His unpopularity was mostly due to public frustrations over mass migration, the rising crime rate brought on by mass migration and the police’s ineffective response for ideological reasons, and the high cost of living in the UK. This ultimately led to his resignation in June.
