State Secretary Tristan Azbej has announced on X that he is stepping down as the head of Hungary Helps, the Hungarian government's humanitarian programme for persecuted Christians around the world. Hungary Today reports that the programme is ending.

‘After 3,155 days, I am concluding my mandate as State Secretary responsible for Hungary Helps, Hungary’s support for persecuted Christians and vulnerable communities worldwide,’ Tristan Azbej wrote on the social media platform X on Monday, 18 May.

The Hungary Helps humanitarian programme was created by the Hungarian government under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in 2017. It was a three-pronged initiative which focused on humanitarian aid, migration control, and promoting religious freedom. It operated in the Middle Eastern and Sub-Saharan African regions, in countries such as Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In February 2026, Hungary Helps was honoured at the International Religious Freedom Summit in Washington, DC in the United States.

Secretary Azbej followed up his initial X post with two replies.

Through Hungary Helps, we delivered humanitarian assistance to more than 60 countries, supporting communities affected by war, terrorism, displacement, and religious persecution. I thank all colleagues, partners, churches, & local communities we worked with over these years. I’m grateful to PM Viktor Orbán & his government for launching this initiative, and to my family for their support. I hope Hungary’s new government will continue this mission. While my governmental service ends, my commitment remains unchanged. Deo gratias!,’ he went on to write.

The new Magyar administration is yet to make any public statements about the future of the Hungary Helps programme. However, Hungary Today reports that the programme is ending.
