Diamond Wallace, a 31-year-old black woman from Madison, Wisconsin is being charged with first-degree intentional homicide for shooting 61-year-old Christine Jones. On 22 March, Wallace shot Jones in the back while she was on her way to work in the Washington state capital. An employee of a nearby hotel discovered her deceased body around 8am that day. The suspect was arrested by police the next day, 23 March.
Wallace knew where her alleged victim’s workplace was since, until April 2025, they were co-workers in the same hotel. According to the criminal complaint by the Madison Police Department obtained by CBS19, the two frequently clashed over politics while working together.
Jones, the victim, was a supporter of President Donald Trump, while Wallace, the perpetrator, vehemently opposed him. Wallace routinely labelled Jones a racist for her support for the President. However, other interpersonal factors also could have played a part in the motive for the murder.
‘Wallace had additionally previously accused CAJ [Christine Jones] of being racist and had expressed animosity towards CAJ for being a Trump supporter. Hotel staff further reported that Wallace blamed CAJ for her termination and had threatened her after she was terminated. In speaking with CAJ’s daughter, it was learned that CAJ had previously complained about Wallace for laziness at work prior to Wallace’s termination from the hotel,’ the complaint states.
It also notes that the victim had a Trump hat visibly displayed behind the windshield of her car at the time of the shooting.
Wallace is also being charged with prohibited possession of a firearm, given that she had previously been convicted of felonies for resisting an officer. She is being held on a $2 million bond.
Given the perp’s likely political motives, the Republican Party of Dane County in Wisconsin has put out a public statement about the shooting. In it, they write:
‘The Republican Party of Dane County is shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic murder of Christine Jones, a 61-year-old Cottage Grove, Wisconsin resident who was shot and killed in Downtown Madison on her way to work. According to publicly available reports, the suspect, a former coworker, has been charged in court with first-degree intentional homicide.
This was a deliberate, targeted act of violence against a woman simply trying to live her life. It is heartbreaking. It is unacceptable and reflects a deep erosion of basic human decency that our community cannot ignore.
Violence of this kind does not emerge in a vacuum. It grows in a culture where dehumanization—political, personal, or otherwise—has become far too common. When disagreements turn into resentments, and resentments turn into justification for violence, we lose the very thing that makes a community a community—our shared humanity…We urge every Dane County resident, regardless of background or belief, to recommit to the most basic civic shared responsibility: treating one another as human beings worthy of dignity, safety, and respect for one another.’
