Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said European leaders led by Ursula von der Leyen agreed with President Zelenskyy to continue the war in Ukraine, warning that the conflict has no solution on the battlefield and is costing Europe heavily.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said European leaders reached an agreement with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenskyy on continuing the war, describing the decision as bad news for Europe. In a post on social media on Wednesday, Orbán said the talks were led by Ursula von der Leyen.

According to the Hungarian prime minister, the continuation of the conflict is problematic because, in his view, there is no clear solution on the battlefield despite the destruction it causes. He said that around 35,000 people are killed or seriously wounded each month while the front line barely changes, adding that many families across Europe are affected by the consequences of the war.

Orbán also argued that the conflict is imposing a significant financial burden on European citizens, saying hundreds of billions of euros are being spent while the risk of nuclear escalation remains due to the involvement of a nuclear power.

The prime minister claimed that Hungary could be drawn into the conflict if the current European approach continues. He also criticized opposition politician Péter Magyar, alleging that he had reached a secret agreement with EU leaders in Munich that would bring Hungary closer to countries supporting the war and increase financial support for Ukraine.

Orbán said such an arrangement would include contributing to Ukraine’s funding and distancing Hungary from what he described as cheaper sources of oil and gas. He also claimed that the agreement was kept secret so that Hungarian voters would not learn about it before the elections.

The prime minister added that Hungary must stay out of the conflict and that the government’s priority is to preserve the country’s security. He said the ruling party would continue to pursue that policy.
