Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary has shared a letter from US President Trump in which he compliments his leadership, wishes him luck in this year's election, and—more importantly—hints at a potential presidential visit to Hungary in the near future.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary has shared a letter he had received from US President Donald Trump on the social media platform X. The letter is dated 10 December 2025. However, the Prime Minister waited until today, 9 January 2025, to release it to the public.

In the letter, President Trump thanks the Hungarian Prime Minister for his earlier correspondence and reflects positively on their most recent meeting at the White House, writing:

‘Thank you for your thoughtful letter and for your warm sentiments you shared regarding our recent meeting at the White House. It was a pleasure to host you and your delegation to celebrate the Golden Age of U.S.-Hungary relations. I look forward to further deepening cooperation in the areas of defense, energy, and illegal migration.

Your bold leadership serves as an example for the rest of the world. You have always stood firm to defend the principles that make Hungary a tremendous place — faith, family, and sovereignty. America admires that kind of courage.’

The content of the letter also suggests that President Trump may be coming to Hungary to meet with Prime Minister Orbán in the near future.

‘I am grateful for your invitation to visit Hungary. My team will be in touch with regards to my schedule. Thank you again for your friendship and support. I also want to wish you the best of luck with your electoral campaign in Hungary,’ President Trump’s letter concludes.

Orbán Viktor on X (formerly Twitter): “Grateful for President @realDonaldTrump’s kind words and continued friendship. U.S.-Hungary relations are stronger than ever, built on shared values as patriots. Looking forward to hosting him and his team in Budapest! 🇭🇺🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/i8wc9hWfuR / X”

The incumbent POTUS has already suggested that he would want to meet President Vladimir Putin of Russia in Budapest, Hungary to continue the peace negotiations in the Russo–Ukrainian war. However, due to President Putin’s unwillingness to de-escalate military operations in Ukraine, the peace summit was never realized.

If President Trump does come to Hungary at PM Orbán’s invitation, he will become the fourth US President to visit the country while in office, after George H W Bush, Bill Clinton (who visited twice), and George W Bush.

In the caption of his X post sharing the letter, PM Orbán wrote: ‘Grateful for President Donald Trump’s kind words and continued friendship. U.S.-Hungary relations are stronger than ever, built on shared values as patriots. Looking forward to hosting him and his team in Budapest!’

Orbán has visited Trump in the White House during both of his terms. First, in May 2019, then in November 2025—the meeting that was referenced in the letter cited above.

Having already visited Washington on two occasions, Orbán is now signalling that it is time to return the gesture with an invitation to Trump to come to Hungary.
