The European Commission has presented a new strategy to speed up the adoption of artificial intelligence in key industries and the public sector, aiming to make Europe a global leader in AI-driven science, research, and innovation.

The European Commission announced a new strategy on Wednesday designed to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence in strategic industries and public services, while positioning Europe at the forefront of AI-driven research and innovation.

According to the Commission, the strategy is necessary as artificial intelligence continues to reshape business operations, public administration, and scientific research across the continent. The initiative seeks to harness AI’s transformative potential by promoting its adoption in critical sectors such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, energy, mobility, manufacturing, construction, agriculture, defence, communications, and culture.

The plan also includes measures to support small and medium-sized enterprises by addressing their specific needs and helping them integrate AI into their operations. Concrete steps involve the creation of advanced AI-based health screening centres and the promotion of developments in manufacturing, environmental protection, and the pharmaceutical industry.

The Commission stated that the strategy will strengthen EU efforts to realize the social benefits of AI—from improving the accuracy of medical diagnoses to enhancing the efficiency and accessibility of public services—while ensuring that the technology’s advantages and risks are both carefully managed.

In addition to promoting innovation, the plan aims to make the EU a hub for AI-powered scientific advancement by investing in education, retaining local talent, and attracting skilled professionals to the European labour market.
