Hungarian Prime Minister’s security chief György Bakondi criticized the EU’s migration policy, calling it a failed approach that fuels crime, terrorism, and social tensions. He urged for national-level action to protect Europe’s security and values.

Hungary’s Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister György Bakondi argued on Wednesday that the European Union has failed to correct what he described as a fundamentally flawed migration policy over the past decade. Speaking on Hungary’s public broadcaster M1, he noted that a growing number of member states now view the EU’s migration pact as a mistake, citing its negative consequences across the continent.

According to Bakondi, illegal migration has contributed to terrorism, declining public safety, and increased pressure on social welfare systems. He also warned that new conflicts have emerged in Europe, often stemming from national or tribal rivalries imported from outside the continent. Some migrants, he added, turn to organized crime due to language and skills barriers, while others exploit welfare loopholes.

Bakondi stressed that deportation mechanisms are ineffective and border controls have lost their protective role. He criticized the EU’s migration pact for focusing on quota-based redistribution rather than stopping arrivals at the source. He pointed out that while member states were required to submit national implementation plans detailing camps and funding, only nine of the 27 countries have complied.

He also highlighted Austria as an example, claiming some migrants intentionally fail compulsory German language exams to remain in the asylum system and continue receiving benefits. Beyond these issues, Bakondi warned of the alarming rise of antisemitism in Europe, manifested in large-scale protests unprecedented since 1945.

In his remarks, he described Europe as being at the ‘twenty-fourth hour’ to act in defence of its people, values, and national security. Speaking on Kossuth Radio, he argued that Hungary’s position championed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been validated over time, as Schengen itself is under strain from reintroduced border checks.

Bakondi concluded that Europe is approaching a turning point and that with Hungarian and patriotic initiatives, change in migration policy remains possible. He emphasized that the Hungarian government and the Fidesz–KDNP parliamentary group will continue to push in EU forums to safeguard both Hungarian and European citizens’ interests in what he described as a defining question for Europe’s future.
