Polish MP Dariusz Matecki addressed an open letter to the Hungarian people on Sunday, urging them not to allow ‘Eurocrats’ to steal their country. The appeal, posted on X, expressed concern about the ‘future of Hungary and the fate of every sovereign country that dares to speak its mind in the European Union, governed by Eurocrats’.
‘I am addressing you as a Polish MP—a man who has experienced first-hand in recent years what it is like when a nation is attacked by illegal means under the guise of “rule of law”,’ Matecki began in the letter, which was written in Hungarian.
Matecki is the latest victim of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s crackdown on political opponents. He was arrested in March 2025 in connection with the Justice Fund investigations launched by the Ministry of Justice in early 2024. According to a task force established by Justice Minister Adam Bodnar, substantial portions of the fund were diverted to politically motivated projects, including unauthorized grants to ineligible organisations and the illegal procurement of spyware. Hungarian Conservative recently published an exclusive report detailing how Tusk’s campaign goes even deeper—targeting civil servants who served under the PiS government, using means incompatible with the rule of law.
Matecki has denied all allegations, asserting that the charges are politically driven. In a video message released during his detention, he described himself as a political prisoner and claimed his arrest was an attempt to coerce testimony against former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro. He also alleged that he was denied contact with his family during his time in custody.
‘For years, the European Union—with Germany as the true centre of decision-making—has attacked Poland using brutal and extra-treaty means. They withheld EU funds to which we were legally entitled. It was not a breach of values—it was a pretext to achieve a political objective: to overthrow the legitimate, conservative Polish government and bring Donald Tusk to power—a politician wholly subservient to Berlin’s interests. Today, a year and a half after he took power, it is clear the plan has succeeded—with disastrous consequences for Poland,’ Matecki wrote.
There is a striking similarity between Tusk’s rise to power and the campaign promises of Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar and his Respect and Freedom (Tisza) party. Both are affiliated with the European People’s Party. The EU is currently withholding funds due to Hungary under Article 7 and the rule of law conditionality mechanism—just as it did in Poland—while the EPP and Tisza suggest that the funds will resume under a Magyar-led government, just as they did under Tusk. Péter Magyar has even announced a policy proposal that could pave the way for a political crackdown against opponents, similar to what Poland has already witnessed.
‘Today, our country is in a state of collapse,’ Matecki wrote.
‘Key national investments have been halted. State-owned companies, which for years had developed dynamically, have fallen into the hands of incompetent but politically “acceptable” figures. A purge is taking place in the public media and the administration—unseen since communist times. Opposition members are arrested on trumped-up charges, and independent judges and prosecutors are under pressure.’
In his letter, Matecki mentioned former Deputy Justice Minister Marcin Romanowski, who is currently residing in Hungary after being granted political asylum in December 2024—a move that provoked harsh criticism and a diplomatic campaign against Budapest from Warsaw. ‘For this, we owe you, our Hungarian brothers and sisters, our deep gratitude!’ Matecki stated.
The Polish MP made it clear that ‘Donald Tusk is not Poland’, but rather represents the European People’s Party. ‘Tusk is the smiling face of Eurocracy, which will stop at nothing to break down recalcitrant nations.’
Concluding his open letter, Matecki appealed to the Hungarian people not to fall into the same trap that the Polish electorate did in 2023.
‘Don’t believe the rhetoric about “European values” when it is backed by an elite in Brussels that is ready to destroy any national identity in favour of a unified, soulless superstate.’ He urged Hungarians: ‘Defend your sovereignty. Defend your traditions. Defend your Constitution and your right to decide your own destiny.’
Matecki also called for renewed cooperation and solidarity between the Polish and Hungarian peoples. ‘Today we must act together again. Because what is happening in Brussels is not only a threat to Poland—it is the systematic dismantling of the system of sovereign nation states.’
‘You are not alone. Millions of Poles are watching you with admiration and hope. Thank you for all your gestures of solidarity and support. And we promise: when the time comes—and it is coming—Poland will once again be on the side of freedom. Together with Hungary. Against the dictatorship of the Eurocrats.’
