‘Hungary is interested in reconciliation and settlement of disputes between India and Pakistan, because at the moment the last thing the world needs is an escalating conflict between the two countries,’ Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó of Hungary wrote in a Facebook post last week.
This came in response to Islamist terrorists killing 26 Indian civilians in the disputed Kashmir region on 22 April. Contracting claims over the land in the region between India and Pakistan has been ongoing since 1947, when the new country of Pakistan was formed at the decree of the British Empire occupying the region.
Minister Szijjártó went on to write in his post that he had spoken with his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar over the phone, who informed him about the rising tension between his nation and India, and explained the security challenges it poses to the entire South East Asian region.
‘Hungary is deeply concerned about the spread of terrorism in the world, so we support all initiatives and efforts aimed at curbing terrorism. In accordance with that, we support the move towards reconciliation between India and Pakistan. We do so because in the current global situation, the last thing we need is an escalating conflict between two countries with serious armies and weaponry. Therefore, I have confirmed to my colleague that Hungary is interested in resolving the dispute and preventing it from escalating,’ the Foreign Minister wrote.
He also added that he had discussed the potential future relationship between Pakistan and the European Union.
