A significant increase in the supply of used electric vehicles (EVs) is expected on Hungary’s second-hand car market between 2026 and 2027, coinciding with the phase-out of large corporate fleets, Das WeltAuto, a nationwide dealership network, announced in a statement on Saturday.
Although electric vehicles still represent a small share of the overall used car market, the segment is showing visible signs of growth, the company noted. ‘The used car market continues to expand steadily, while a new era is beginning, the rise of electric and Chinese brands is reshaping the future supply,’ said Sales Director Péter Tóth at Das WeltAuto.
According to Datahouse statistics cited in the statement, Tesla remains the most prominent electric brand in Hungary’s used car market, with 2,655 transactions and a 0.38 per cent market share.
Meanwhile, new Chinese entrants—including MG, BYD, Omoda, DFSK, Jaecoo, Lynk & Co, Aiways, and NIO—collectively accounted for 1,155 sales, representing just 0.17 per cent of the market, though their presence is becoming increasingly visible. MG leads the Chinese brands with nearly 800 sales, while BYD is rapidly gaining recognition.
The report also highlighted that Hungary’s used car market maintained its momentum in the first nine months of 2025, with nearly 700,000 ownership changes recorded between January and September—a 2.8 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. In September alone, ownership transfers exceeded 80,000.
Opel, Volkswagen, and Suzuki continue to dominate the Hungarian market. The market structure remains stable, with compact (C-segment) and small cars (B-segment) still the most popular categories, while the SUV trend is notably less pronounced among used vehicles than new ones.
Nearly one-fifth of all transactions (19.2 per cent) take place in Budapest, while the capital and its surrounding area account for over a third (35.8 per cent) of the national used car traffic.
According to Tóth, vehicles with verified service histories and transparent ownership records are selling faster, even amid market uncertainty. ‘Buyers today are more conscious, trust and transparent maintenance records have become increasingly valuable,’ he added.
Das WeltAuto is the used car division of Porsche Hungaria, which represents the Volkswagen Group’s brands in Hungary. Through its network of 30 dealerships nationwide, the company offers thoroughly inspected, well-maintained vehicles, with warranty options available for top-quality cars.
