Hungarian telecommunications and technology group 4iG and US-based SpaceX have signed agreements to introduce Starlink Mobile and secure satellite communications services known as Sovereign Solutions, 4iG said on Wednesday.
The agreements were signed in Bastrop, Texas, by 4iG Chairman and CEO Gellért Jászai and SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell. The company described the deals as the first of their kind in Europe.
The partnership forms part of 4iG’s telecommunications, space and defence technology activities, the company said.
4iG will initially introduce the first-generation Starlink Mobile technology. This will later be followed by Starlink Mobile V2, which will provide 5G-based non-terrestrial network (NTN) capabilities using SpaceX’s global rights to use the 2 GHz frequency band.
Starlink Mobile will complement the terrestrial mobile networks operated by 4iG’s telecommunications businesses in Hungary and the Western Balkans in areas where conventional mobile coverage is limited or unavailable.
The service could also help maintain connectivity during emergencies or temporary disruptions to terrestrial mobile infrastructure.
According to 4iG, the later Starlink Mobile V2 technology will enable high-speed broadband data connections directly to mobile phones using 5G-based NTN technology.
The second agreement covers Sovereign Solutions, which will provide secure communications services based on protected satellite networks designed for national security purposes. The arrangement is intended to support the development of sovereign, government-level secure satellite communications capabilities.
4iG said the two agreements establish a new cooperation model in Europe combining commercial satellite-to-mobile connectivity with sovereign satellite communications capabilities.
The company’s chairman and CEO, Gellért Jászai, said the agreements aim to make network connectivity available to everyone, everywhere.
SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell said the partnership would enable 4iG to introduce Starlink Mobile and its next-generation V2 technology, providing direct satellite-to-mobile connectivity in Hungary and the Western Balkans.
