Hungarian MP for the KDNP party in the ruling Fidesz–KDNP coalition István Simicskó has recently appeared on a political commentary programme on the Hungarian public TV station M1, where he discussed the potential EU accession of Ukraine.
He told the audience that such a call would be ‘very premature’ and would pose ‘serious security and economic risks’. He went on to state that in previous years, it was a matter of principle that the EU would open up to Ukraine with the aim that at some point in the future—after the end of the war, reconstruction, harmonization of law, and guarantees provided for minority rights—our Eastern neighbour would become part of the EU. However, the idea of an accelerated process for Ukraine has only recently been raised among EU leaders, per which the country could become a member of the Union as early as 2029.
MP Simicskó pointed out that without a stable institutional system, precisely defined borders and knowledge of the population size, it is not possible to start the process of obtaining EU membership. He also believes that the accession procedure should not be started with accelerated rules or rules that are more flexible than those under which other countries have already joined.
He also emphasized that the Hungarian government has consistently represented its national interests and supported peace, believing that discussions about Ukraine’s potential EU membership should only occur after a ceasefire, peace, and reconstruction have been achieved.
