American actress Sydney Sweeney has been targeted by the X account Zionist Tracker for her supposed ties to supporters of the Israeli government.
The account in question has 53,000 followers and a bloody palm print as its profile picture. On Sunday, 25 January, they posted an image of Sweeney, along with the text explaining her connections to Israel. According to the user, she is dating ‘fanatical zionist’ Scooter Braun.
Braun is an American businessman and record producer who is known for managing such world-famous music artists as Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande. As far as his connections to Israel go, he is ethnically Jewish and has been an outspoken advocate for the release of Israeli hostages taken by Hamas during the 7 October 2023 attacks. He has Hungarian ancestry on his father’s side.
The post also claims Sweeney did ‘Zionist propaganda for genocidal Israeli Hasbara front Stand With Us’. In the replies, the account followed up with a post about Sweeney’s meeting with two of the released Israeli hostages earlier this month, likely prompting the attack. The critical post has received 49,000 likes, 6,000 reposts, and 1,000 comments thus far.
There have been quite a few people in support of Sweeney in the controversy.
For instance, a user named JeremyUnplugged wrote: ‘If you wanted one more reason to love Sydney Sweeney, here it is. Sydney Sweeney alongside Hamas captivity survivors Noa Argamani and Avinatan Or,’ prior to the image by Zionist Tracker being shared.
The Euphoria actress has received criticism from progressive activists in the past. In July of last year, she starred in an ad campaign for the clothing company American Eagle. The ads made puns about Sydney Sweeney having great ‘jeans’, in a double entendre also meaning ‘genes’. This made some accuse her of racism and white supremacy, for supposedly insinuating the genetic supremacy of white people.
Despite the backlash, the ad campaign became a massive success, which led to the American Eagle stock more than doubling its price per share. During the controversy, it was also revealed that Sweeney is registered to vote as a Republican in the state of Florida.
