Pope Leo XIV will be holding his inaugural mass on Sunday, 18 May at the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. Many world leaders are expected to be in attendance, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, as well as Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, from the United Kingdom.
As for Hungary, President of the Republic Tamás Sulyok will be leading the country’s delegation, his office informed the Hungarian state news agency MTI on Friday, 16 May. He is also expected to meet the newly inaugurated head of the Catholic church after the mass.
On the day of Pope Leo XIV’s election earlier this month, President Sulyok of Hungary wrote a letter to the new Pope expressing his good wishes.
Then, the President of the Republic thanked the Holy Catholic Church for ‘bearing witness to the love of Almighty God and of Christ made man, and for continuing to be a steadfast advocate of peace, love for our neighbours, and human dignity’, the public statement read.
