PM Viktor Orbán praised Hungary’s Home Start mortgage programme, calling it a success for young buyers, before slamming TISZA’s plans to increase the income tax. Branding candidate Péter Magyar “Little Rooster”, Orbán warned of chaos within the opposition TISZA party and urged Hungarians to resist their tax hikes with 219 days until elections.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary shared a lengthy post on his Facebook page on Thursday, 4 September. He starts by noting that it was only three (now two) days before the Fidesz party convention known as ‘the Civil Picnic’ in Kötcse, Hungary over the weekend.

He then went on to write about the success of the Home Start government programme, which offers mortgages with fixed 3-per-cent rates and only 10-per-cent down payments for first-time home buyers.

‘Interest in the Home Start programme has exceeded all expectations. Young people understood that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy their own home. It was now or never! Banks are stepping on each other's toes. Rent prices are falling. The naysayers have gone silent. We promised that even those who did not vote for us would benefit. We have kept our promise!’ the Prime Minister wrote.

Recently, the big news of the Hungarian campaign season has been the comments made by TISZA Party Vice Chair Zoltán Tarr, who, at a campaign event, told his supporters: ‘I won’t tell you everything, because if I did, we would fail,’ in reference to media reports about a leaked internal memo stating that TISZA is planning to increase the income tax if they got into power.

‘We have to stop TISZA’s tax increase! The whole country has revolted against it,’ PM Orbán wrote on the matter. ‘There is complete chaos with "the Little Rooster" [a nickname he just gave to TISZA Prime Ministerial candidate Péter Magyar] and his crew. Confusing talk and cluelessness. Three-bracket progressive income tax, energy price increases, and now backtracking on VAT reductions. And this is how they want to govern. Complete incompetence. You couldn't even manage a chicken coop this way, let alone a country,’ he added.

‘Let’s fight for justice! Let’s fight against the lies!’ Prime Minister Orbán called for action at the end of his message. He then added another countdown, noting that there were only 220 (now 219) days left until the Hungarian parliamentary elections.
