At the Tranzit Festival last week in Tihany, Hungary, a panel discussion was held jointly with Hungarian Ambassador to the United States in Washington, DC Szabolcs Takács, publicist Zsolt Bayer, and Director General for the Center for Fundamental Rights Miklós Szánthó.
During the discussion, Director Szánthó stated: Péter Magyar is nothing more than a poor-quality import from Brussels who is repackaging the old left-wing platform. According to him, ‘austerity measures, tax increases, and cuts to family benefit’ are on the agenda that Brussels regularly offers, now delivered by Péter Magyar.
According to Szánthó, Péter Magyar’s appearance on the scene is no coincidence, but fits perfectly into Brussels’ strategy, which regularly works against the interests of the Hungarian people. He emphasized that ‘the deep state in Brussels uses legal tools to package its political attacks,’ trying to discredit right-wing politicians or force nation states into coalitions that are unfit to govern through backroom deals.
Speaking about foreign policy, Ambassador Takács said that there is a ‘civilizational’ alliance between the Donald Trump administration in the United States and the Hungarian right. Miklós Szánthó added that Hungary, as a small country, must resolutely represent its own interests: ‘We need a selfish foreign policy that preserves the benefits of EU membership while also building good relations with other major powers.’ Anyone who questions this, he added, is speaking against Hungarian interests.
