Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó had a long phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday, discussing Donald Trump’s peace efforts regarding the war in Ukraine and bilateral relations.
According to Szijjártó, Rubio assured him that ‘President Trump will not give up’ finding a way to settle the war between Ukraine and Russia. ‘Trump is the only leader with the strength to bring peace back to Central Europe,’ Szijjártó stated, pointing out that unlike some European politicians, ‘Hungary stands firmly behind his mission.’

The Hungarian FM also reported that the two discussed bilateral relations, ‘which have entered a new phase of friendship and mutual respect.’ ‘Since President Trump took office, six US investments have been announced in Hungary, and we committed to US technology in small modular nuclear reactors to ensure Hungary’s secure energy supply,’ Szijjártó wrote in a post on X.
The US Department of State released a statement following the call, which said that Rubio spoke with Szijjártó to ‘underscore the importance of supporting a peace process centred on ending the Russia–Ukraine war through lasting negotiated settlement.’ It also noted that the two discussed ‘strategic efforts to ensure energy security.’
