President Santiago Peña, a member of the conservative Colorado Party, became the first incumbent Paraguayan President to visit Hungary in 30 years. He has met with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, President Tamás Sulyok, and House Speaker László Kövér of Hungary as well.

The small South American nation of Paraguay rarely makes it into the Hungarian news cycle. However, its sitting President visited our country on Tuesday, 9 December, for the first time in 30 years.

President Santiago Peña of Paraguay has met with the highest level of leadership in the Hungarian government, including Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, President Tamás Sulyok, and House Speaker László Kövér.

‘We agreed with President Santiago Peña that although our countries are geographically distant, Hungary and Paraguay are united by a number of shared values—in particular by the importance of national identity and the family,’ President Sulyok has posted to the social media site X about his meeting with his Paraguayan counterpart.

Dr. Tamás Sulyok on X (formerly Twitter): “For the first time in 30 years, the President of Paraguay is visiting Hungary again 🇭🇺🇵🇾We agreed with President Santiago Peña that although our countries are geographically distant, Hungary and Paraguay are united by a number of shared values – in particular by the importance… pic.twitter.com/1wf67OdIac / X”

President Peña is a member of the right-wing conservative Colorado Party, thus he is ideologically aligned with Prime Minister Orbán’s Fidesz party. He was elected President in April 2023, after securing 43.9 per cent of the popular vote in a multi-way race, beating the second-place finisher by 15.6 points. Paraguay is a nation of 6.4 million people.

According to the online version of the Hungarian daily Magyar Nemzet, Paraguay, just like Hungary, had to deal with a United States Ambassador who constantly criticized his host country’s conservative leadership during the Biden administration.
