While speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum on Tuesday, 30 September, Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland declared: ‘We must recognize that this is our war…If we lose this war, the consequences will affect not only our generation, but also future generations—in Poland, throughout Europe, in the United States, everywhere in the world.’
The statement quickly drew the attention of his Hungarian counterpart, Viktor Orbán. Prime Minister Orbán has consistently argued in favour of negotiated peace rather than military escalation in the ongoing Russo–Ukrainian conflict. That is why he strongly objected to Tusk’s words, addressing him directly in a public message on the social media platform X:
‘You may think that you are at war with Russia, but Hungary is not. Neither is the European Union. You are playing a dangerous game with the lives and security of millions of Europeans. This is very bad!’
Orbán Viktor on X (formerly Twitter): “Dear @donaldtusk, You may think that you are at war with Russia, but Hungary is not. Neither is the European Union. You are playing a dangerous game with the lives and security of millions of Europeans. This is very bad! / X”
Dear @donaldtusk, You may think that you are at war with Russia, but Hungary is not. Neither is the European Union. You are playing a dangerous game with the lives and security of millions of Europeans. This is very bad!
Orbán’s post on X has generated significant attention, receiving over 23,000 likes, 4,700 retweets, and 1,700 comments within just a day.
In the replies, Orbán also shared an article by Euractiv, which is reporting on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s own remarks at the Warsaw Security Forum. Zelenskyy called for a joint European air defence system to counter Russian threats, further underlining the ongoing divide within Europe over how best to confront the war.
