Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez is set to join Dominik Szoboszlai at Liverpool, as the current Premier League champions finalize a €46 million deal for the 21-year-old. With that, Kerkez becomes the second most valuable Hungarian footballer in history—after Szoboszlai, who joined Liverpool for €70 million in 2023.

Liverpool agreed to a £40 million deal (€46,7 million) to sign Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, as reported by the BBC. With Kerkez on board, Liverpool will have two Hungarian internationals in their squad, with Dominik Szoboszlai preparing for his third season in the Premier League.

Kerkez, born in 2003 in Vrbas, Serbia, is of Hungarian ethnicity and chose to represent Hungary internationally. He began his youth football in Serbia before moving to Hungary and joining Győri ETO FC. In 2020 he signed with AC Milan’s youth team after being scouted for his pace and work rate. After failing to make a senior appearance in Serie A, he transferred to Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, where he quickly established himself as one of the most promising young full-backs in the Eredivisie.

In July 2023 Kerkez signed with AFC Bournemouth, becoming one of the youngest Hungarian players to play in the English Premier League. He played all 38 league games last season as Bournemouth finished ninth with a club-record 56 Premier League points, contributing two goals and six assists. The 21-year-old recovered the ball 169 times last season—the fifth most of any defender in the Premier League and more than any Liverpool defender. He also won the ball in the Cherries’ attacking third 11 times—the ninth most among defenders in the division, and again more than any of his potential future teammates at Liverpool.

‘Kerkez is becoming the second most valuable Hungarian footballer in history’

Kerkez made his senior debut for Hungary in 2022 and has since become the national team’s first-choice left-back.

According to media reports, Bournemouth have already signed Adrien Truffert from Rennes as his replacement.

With the £40 million deal, Kerkez is becoming the second most valuable Hungarian footballer in history, after Szoboszlai, who joined Liverpool in 2023 for £60 million (€70 million).
