Migrant riots in major Western European cities on New Year’s Eve have demonstrated a direct link between illegal migration and the deterioration of public security, György Bakondi, security adviser to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, pointed out on Monday.
According to Bakondi, police officers, firefighters, and paramedics were attacked on New Year’s Eve in several countries, including Germany, Italy, and France, specifically by individuals with a migration background.
In France, more than 1,700 vehicles were vandalized, while in the Netherlands, a Christian church was set on fire. By contrast, he added, no similar incidents occurred in the eastern part of the European Union, such as in the Czech Republic, Poland, or Budapest.
According to the chief adviser, leaders of Western European countries are increasingly recognizing that decisive measures must be taken to curb migration. As a result, they are tightening immigration conditions and accelerating the deportation of those who violate the law.
Bakondi argued that the root of the situation lies in the fact that migrants—mostly of Islamic background—are unable and unwilling to integrate into Western societies and instead seek to live according to Islam, that is, their own laws, rather than those of the host states. This, he said, leads to increasingly aggressive and expansionist behaviour across Europe.
He stressed that this is why the migration pact promoted by the European Union is not a solution, as it would redistribute illegal migrants and force their admission even into places where they are currently not present, such as Warsaw or Prague. Bakondi warned that such an approach would amount to generalizing a model that has already produced the current situation across Western Europe.
For this reason, he emphasized, the Hungarian government will not change its migration policy under any pressure or financial penalties. The interests of the Hungarian people come first: the government starts from the Hungarian national interest, which means preserving sovereignty and strengthening public security, Bakondi concluded.
