‘Hungary is a major winner of its economic relations with China and serves as an excellent example of how much can be gained from a respectful and civilized cooperation between Eastern and Western companies,’ Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó has declaired, according to a statement released by his ministry on Sunday, 27 July, and as cited by Magyar Nemzet.
During a meeting with the Chairman of China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee, Minister Szijjártó highlighted that Hungary has seen significant advantages from its cooperation with China. He also noted that this success hinges on Hungary’s ongoing ability to attract investment projects from the Far East, especially in competition with countries in Western Europe.
The Minister went on to state: ‘So far, we have been successful in this competition. In fact, one-third of all Chinese investments in Europe last year came to Hungary. Each of these was secured in extremely tough battles against other Western European nations.’ He added: ‘Today, four out of the five largest Chinese corporate investments underway in Europe are taking place in Hungary. These investments are enabling Hungary to remain at the forefront of the global technological revolution.’
Minister Szijjártó also pointed out that Chinese investments have generated tens of thousands of jobs in Hungary over the past few years. He emphasized that these projects are built on cutting-edge technology and play a major role in the country’s record-setting export growth.
‘When it comes to air traffic, Hungary is also a leader in the region. No other Central European city—including Vienna—has as many flight connections with major Chinese cities as Budapest. There are currently 21 weekly flights connecting Budapest to major cities in China…Hungary’s interest is in ensuring that global economic cooperation continues in a civilized, calm and fair manner, and that the world does not divide once again into geopolitical blocs. Hungary has clearly demonstrated how beneficial it can be when Eastern and Western companies work together in a civilized, effective and respectful way,’ the minister concluded.
