At the Yerevan Dialogue conference, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó of Hungary has criticized the EU’s political climate, lamenting the decline of rational debate and the proclivity to label views outside the liberal mainstream as ‘fascist’. He also defended Hungary’s national-interest-driven policies and praised Trump’s resurgence of patriotism and sovereignty on the global stage.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó of Hungary spoke at the Yerevan Dialogue conference in Yerevan, Armenia, on Tuesday, 27 May. There, he told the audience that Hungary’s foreign policy has always been guided by national interest, even if some of their positions outside the liberal mainstream may get them branded by some as ‘fascists’ or ‘allies of the Russian President’.

On that note, he lamented the fact that mutual respect has disappeared from international politics, and the intellectual quality of debates has deteriorated as well.

‘And I regret to say that the European Union is leading the way in this respect, and in a negative sense. Over the last few years, it has been very difficult to have a rational dialogue in the European political arena. With the war in Ukraine, it has become virtually impossible,’ Minister Szijjártó went on to state during a panel discussion at the conference.

As an example, he brought up the issue of energy supply, which has become completely politicized, even though it is impossible to heat one’s home with political statements or press conferences, he quipped. He also stressed that the whole international political scene could gain a lot if the world’s states were able to back off a little from this attitude.

On President Trump’s victory last year in the United States, the Minister stated:

‘With the victory of President Donald Trump, the situation in the United States has immediately improved a lot, because those who were marginalized are now part of the mainstream, and those who were marginalized are now in the majority. I think that patriotism, the sovereign approach, which was previously ignored, is now becoming more mainstream. So there are big changes in international politics in this respect,’ Minister Szijjártó concluded.
