Miklós Szánthó of the Budapest-based Center for Fundamental Rights hailed the upcoming Budapest Peace Summit between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia as a chance to end the Ukraine war and showcase Hungary’s global relevance. He argued the event disproves claims of PM Orbán’s isolation and highlights the importance of defending Hungary’s sovereignty.

The Budapest Peace Summit is, first and foremost, significant for our generation because it could put an end to the war in Ukraine, which was in fact started by Russian aggression but escalated into a global conflict with the effective “help” of Brussels: the meeting between Trump and Putin on Hungarian soil brings peace within reach,’ Director General Miklós Szánthó of the Budapest-based conservative think tank Center for Fundamental Rights wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday, 18 October.

‘Secondly, but not least, there is also a strong current/domestic political dimension,’ he continued. ‘It proves that what the mainstream left-liberal-TISZA public says or suggests about Hungary and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is simply not true. Hungary is heading in the right direction on the highway…As with the previous unorthodox economic policy, utility price cuts, border protection, and the peace mission, they tried to deny the essence of the matter, portraying the Hungarian position as useless, ridiculous, or outright barbaric. Once again, it turned out that their problem was not only with the position itself, but mainly with the fact that it was Hungarian.’

The Director also stressed that with the historic peace summit soon taking place in Budapest, all claims about the supposed ‘isolation’ of PM Orbán of Hungary on the world stage have been invalidated. The summit also proves that Hungary has better adapted to the changing world order than Brussels, he added.

‘And why is sovereignty important, the independence of a country’s leader, so that he is not a puppet but can make decisions freely? Because freedom is an opportunity: an opportunity to do the right thing. And Hungary is doing just that right now,’ Director Szánthó concluded his post.
