Former professional kickboxer and businessman Andrew Tate has a large and dedicated fanbase, mostly composed of young men. He has 8.7 million followers on the social media platform X. He just posted a short message about Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary there, saying ‘If Victor Orban [sic!] continues to be so remarkably based I’m going to invest 100,000,000 dollars into Hungary just out of respect’.
This was not posted in response to anything, so we can only speculate on the context based on the timeline. Most likely, Tate was referencing PM Orbán’s conduct in the EU summit in Brussels, Belgium, where he continues to stand up against illegal immigration, was pushing for more diligence when it comes to sending funds to Ukraine, and even met with the protesting farmers who came from all over Europe to voice their discontent in Brussels.
However, Andrew Tate is not necessarily a figure you want public praise from.
He is currently being charged with human trafficking and rape in Romania. He spent three months in a Romanian prison even before being charged, which drew international criticism of the local justice system, which allows for preventive detention. In late March 2023, Tate was released on house arrest. He was officially charged at last in June, then was released from house arrest and put under ‘judicial control’ in August.
His promise of investing $100 million in the Hungarian economy is unlikely to be actually followed through, given the fact that most of his assets have been seized by the Romanian authorities.
His supporters claim that he is being prosecuted for political reasons by the ‘global elite’ (or, ‘the Matrix’, as Tate himself likes to refer to it) because he stands up for traditional masculine values.
However, some public statements made by Tate himself on record seem to suggest that he in fact was coercing women into working for his webcam model business. His trial date is yet to be set. Given that Romanian jurisdiction only allows for bench trials with no jury, he is likely to be convicted.
