Bank of America vice-president Erin Piacenti, 32, was stabbed to death in an apparently random attack in New York’s Times Square on Monday afternoon before police shot and killed the perpetrator.
Piacenti was attacked at around 4.24pm on 31 August near Seventh Avenue and West 42nd Street, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD). She was taken to hospital with a stab wound to the abdomen but later died from her injuries. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the attack as ‘random and unprovoked’.
Piacenti worked as a vice-president in Bank of America’s business selection and conflicts unit, according to her LinkedIn profile. The bank confirmed her employment on Tuesday, describing her as a ‘valued teammate’ and expressing condolences to her family. She graduated from Fordham University School of Law in 2021.
Police identified the attacker as 49-year-old Queens resident Pamela Cisneros.
According to Tisch, Cisneros first pulled two large knives from a shopping bag and stabbed a 68-year-old man who had just exited the subway and was waiting to cross the street with his wife. Around 20 seconds later, she attacked Piacenti. The first victim was hospitalized in stable condition.
Officers subsequently confronted Cisneros while she was still carrying the knives. Police said they spent several minutes attempting to persuade her to surrender before deploying a Taser. When it failed to stop her and she advanced towards officers, two officers opened fire. Cisneros later died at Bellevue Hospital.
The NYPD said Cisneros had no New York City arrest record but had documented mental-health-related encounters with police in 2018 and 2019. No motive has been identified.
