Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will end physical disc production for all new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028, marking one of the biggest shifts in the history of the console gaming industry.

Under the new policy, all games released for PlayStation consoles after the cut-off date will be distributed exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store and retail download codes. Titles released before January 2028 will continue to be available on physical discs.

In a statement published on the PlayStation Blog, Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer habits and the industry’s continued transition toward digital distribution.

‘As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028,’ the company said.

Sony argued that digital purchases now significantly outpace physical sales and said the move would allow it to focus on improving how players access games while continuing to offer both PlayStation Store purchases and retailer-based digital sales.

The announcement follows Rockstar Games’ recent decision not to release Grand Theft Auto VI on disc. Instead, the game’s boxed retail edition contains only a download code, a move that drew criticism from collectors and physical media advocates. Industry analysts now view Sony’s announcement as confirmation that Rockstar’s strategy reflected a broader shift across the console market.

Despite the commercial rationale, the decision has triggered widespread concern over game ownership, consumer choice and long-term preservation.

The Video Game History Foundation said the move highlights the growing challenge of preserving digital-only games. While acknowledging that physical media has been gradually losing importance for years, the organization criticized the lack of long-term preservation strategies from the industry.

It called on platform holders and trade organizations, including the Entertainment Software Association, to work with museums and archives on legal solutions that would allow digital-only titles to be preserved and studied in the future.

Publishing company and preservation advocate Lost in Cult also expressed disappointment, pledging to continue supporting video game preservation despite the industry’s move away from physical formats.

Meanwhile, GOG used the announcement to highlight its own DRM-free model, emphasizing that users retain access to purchased games even if they are later removed from sale.

Sony’s decision has also reignited concerns about digital ownership following the company’s recent announcement that more than 550 films purchased through the PlayStation Network would be removed from users’ libraries because of licensing changes, without refunds or replacement access.

The announcement comes amid broader reports that Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox console may also abandon disc drives entirely, suggesting the industry is rapidly approaching an all-digital future.

For collectors, preservationists and players who value physical ownership, Sony’s decision marks the end of an era. For the broader industry, however, it signals that digital distribution has become the dominant model for console gaming.
